Lessons from Fencing on Life's Control

I’m stuck on a piece of advice I got from a YMCA fencing class when I was a kid. “Hold the hilt like it’s a small bird. Loose enough that you don’t hurt it. Tight enough that it won’t fly away.” I think about that in relation to the aspects of life we care about but can’t control.

Making Positive Change in Business

As business people, we can make positive change within our constraints of time, cost and opportunity. One thing for our teams or for the people effected by the products or services we provide. One thing that has the potential to make lives or a community better. #EffectiveLeadership #SustainableBusinessStrategy #PositiveImpact

Balancing Delivery and Discovery

Delivery has a short term focus. Discovery has a longer term focus. Ongoing attention to both time frames better delivers in the short term what creates value for the long term. #dualtrackagile #polaritythinking

Balancing Risk and Reward in Agile

Dual track agile balances risk and reward. Discovery involves taking risks and testing new ideas that may or may not work. Delivery leverages established patterns and practices to make predictable and reliable progress. #dualtrackagile #polaritythinking
